How your score works

Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a "word" is any five characters, spaces included. That keeps scores fair between short and long words. Only correctly typed words count towards your WPM, so rushing and missing costs you. Raw speed counts every word you finished, mistakes and all.

What's a good result?

Most people who type every day land somewhere around 40 to 55 WPM. Past 70 you're faster than almost any job needs, and above 100 you're in competitive territory. The typing speed guide has the full breakdown and what each band feels like.

Getting faster

The quickest gains come from accuracy, not effort: a clean 50 WPM beats a messy 65 once corrections are counted. Short, frequent practice beats long sessions. Our guide to typing faster lays out a simple plan, and Clackshot turns that practice into a game: every correct keystroke fires at an incoming ship.

Questions

How is WPM calculated?

WPM (words per minute) counts every five characters as one word, including spaces. This test adds up the characters of the words you typed correctly, plus one space after each, divides by five, then divides by the minutes elapsed.

What is raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts every word you finished, right or wrong. The gap between raw and net WPM shows how much speed your mistakes are costing you.

How is accuracy measured?

Each key you press is checked against the letter it should be. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct, so a fixed typo still counts as one miss.

Which test length should I use?

Fifteen seconds shows your burst speed, sixty seconds is closer to how fast you type in real work. Thirty seconds is a good everyday check.

Is my result saved?

Only your best WPM is kept, in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
